Beckenham Hills Bridge

This bridge crosses a beautiful stretch of the Hurunui river in a quiet, off the beaten track location.

The bridge was built by Walter McFarlane, a local land owner and framer in 1911. It was built because of the difficulty in getting stock, produce and provisions in and out of the Ethelton Valley. The bridge opened up a route to Scargill Railway Station.

To get there from Cheviot:-

Drive south down SH1 to the Hurunui Bridge. Turn right immediately before the bridge, after about 4 kms. turn left for Cat Hill. Follow this road for a further 3 kms. Watch out for a glimpse of the bridge to pinpoint it’s location. Access is gained through a gate at the side of the road just beyond the bridge.
