Hamuri Bluff Walkway

This is a truly magnificent walk from Oaro to Spy Glass Point at the end of the Bluff. The walk takes a total of about 4 ½ hours return, but it is wise to allow longer to be able to take in the different interesting features.

Walk through Oao village to the railway and turn right along the track at the far side of the line. Low tide is needed to get to the end of the Bluff/ Walking along the track at the side of the railway after passing the disused tunnel, is the site of a Maori village at Mikanui. Further along is the Mikanui earth flow where markers are used to measure the movement (a major obstacle for the railway). Just past the earthflow is the grave of whaler George Allright and probable site of an early whaling station. Beware of the many seals and look out for fossils. At the end of Bluff there are natural limestone arches.

To get there from Cheviot:-

Drive north to the Oaro River Bridge. This is where the SH1 emerges from the Hundalee Hills to the Kaikoura coast (40 mins). Turn right immediately before the bridge and park the car.
