Claverley

At Claverley there is the well preserved remains of an old Pa site (fortified Maori village). This position gives good views of the coastline, Hamuri Bluff and distant Kaikoura mountains.

In the late 18th century Tukiauau – chief of the Mgati Mamoe tribe at Omihi, moved to Claverely (Pakiki) and built the Pa.

The true feeling of this place is not easily portrayed by the photograph.

To get there:-

Less than ½ hour drive north of Cheviot, cross the Conway bridge and immediately turn right. Follow the road as it curves to the north, following the coastline and railway line for several kms. After passing under the railway, park up and enter the first gate to the left. After entering through the gate, walk up the steep rise to the right. The Pa site is at the top of the hill. Please be careful of the electric fence.
